Frustration as a sport

Re: -with no f(0) folders, P2P won't work, at least not for transfering demos onto your neighbour's carousel.

It all depends. <grin> If you have demos in your f(1) folders, I'm pretty sure P2P will still work with those cards.

Re: If I mark a card with a heart (favourite), the program creates an entire new file on my hard drive to indicate this fact? Unbelievable. Ditto for disabling a card. That's crazy programming logic.

I'm a programmer. I wouldn't do it that way but it is a simple and effective solution. Essentially those files a flags and their cost is just a tiny amount of disk space. The alternative wold be a status file that would probably be harder to maintain.

Re: I wonder if the *overview.demo files are the transitions.

I don't think so. The transitions are in the models folder with an "it" prefix like e0028_it04_38912301.vghd I haven't yet tried to figure out what the numeric codes after the "it" mean.

Re: Why is there a demos.log file and how big will it get? What is it's purpose, and am I really ever likely to look at it?

There have been and still are some problems with the carrousel not working correctly. Totem added this file so we could better report a problem by copying out the relevant part of the log. I have no idea if there is an upper limit to its size.

Re: Carrousel

I and a number of others have requested that Totem modify the VG app so that a user can ***** cards of his choice into the carrousel. That way we can use the carrousel to preview a card before buying. I don't know if Totem has any plan to provide this capability. See the following threads:

@Dorsai6 Wow. I didn't expect so much detail. It's a lot to absorb all in one breath. You've gone to a lot of trouble. How in blazes did you ever figure all of
this out? Don't answer that.

Oh, I see. P2P depends on some of the files existing in the models folder.

----------------

For this dialogue, let me define a couple of terms for quick identification:
  • (f0) will indicate a models folder containing only the small data files (the demos, the P2P sharing, etc.)
  • (f1) will indicate a models folder containing all of the data after buying a card

This will abbreviate the speech and clean up any ***** in the following as I think out loud. I'm trying to figure out if removing all the f(0) folders will affect the performance of the software:
  • if I delete the (f0) folders, they get replaced next time the girl shows up on the carousel. The model appears as a grey silhouette on the carousel and the demo is downloaded.
  • if I don't delete the (f0) folders, when a girl cycles back to the carousel after a long *****, the software doesn't need to download the demo, because it's already there. No silhouette, no download - immediate playback.
  • if I delete the (f0) folders, and shut off automatic download demos, and shut off automatic play demos, I can save some space and only ***** having silhouettes permanently on my carousel, which I don't use anyway. It used to be a promotional tool, but it makes no difference now. The software can play no demos except the demos contained in the f(1) folders (the cards I own).
  • with no f(0) folders, P2P won't work, at least not for transfering demos onto your neighbour's carousel.

As a gold member (under 100 cards), if I were to quit now and go away, never to enter the site again; I could continue to use the software as a stand-alone and play all the clips that I own. I wouldn't need the (f0) folders, and I would never need an upgrade. Not that I'm planning this, but with 12,000,000 users I can confidently guarantee you someone else has, and another one is contemplating it. I wouldn't keep those empty folders if I didn't need them. They're always in the way, whenever I go looking for stuff with windows explorer. Users need to know this stuff.

---------------------

It's fairly easy to identify which card folders contain a card from the size of the data files. I've been a user for years, but haven't bought many cards. Consequently, I have a large number of folders with very little information in them (ie- I haven't bought that card yet).

Deleting the (f0)'s wouldn't save a lot of space anyway, but a new user might want to do this, considering the vast number of empty folders that exist. A user that will never buy another card might not want them either, even if she was active in the forums and very popular there and planned to stay active for years to come.

To the untrained eye they look like errors, just from their presence. If we decide to include any information about the use of file types in the help files, we had better include this info too.

---------------

If I mark a card with a heart (favourite), the program creates an entire new file on my hard drive to indicate this fact? Unbelievable. Ditto for disabling a card. That's crazy programming logic.

I wonder if the *overview.demo files are the transitions.

Why is there a demos.log file and how big will it get? What is it's purpose, and am I really ever likely to look at it?

Re: File types

I'm a Mac user and I haven't investigated the role of every file type, but here is what I think I know. :)

The models folder contains one folder for every card you own and for every demo you've had on your carrousel (unless you've been deleting folders for demo cards). There is also a folder for skin data, but I'm not sure about the purpose of its contents.

Each card folder in the models folder has two kinds of clip files. The .demo are demos for the carrousel but will also play if you own the card. In addition there are three types of control files. The .vhdshows is present if you own the card and indicates the resolution of the clips. The .vhdtrailers is present for all cards including carrousel demos and also indicates resolution. The vhdp2p control P2P torrent sharing in some way.

The data folder contains control information. There is one folder for every card you own or demo you've loaded. There are also a number of additional folders and file many of which I have never explored.

Each card folder in the data folder has 3-6 files.
x9999_full.png is the carousel image
x9999.jpg is the card image for you collection.
x9999.vhddisabled is a control that is present only if you've disabled the card
x9999.vhdfavorite is a control that is present only if you've marked a card with a heart.
x9999.xml is an XML file containing all the descriptive information about the card including its tags.
x9999_unlock_cache.png is an image used by the buy-me dialog.

the "e" series card have a x999_999999_overview.demo which is probably a demo clip.

I think I understand the following file types that reside in the data folder itself.
demos.log is the log file of you demo activity
demos.lst is a binary list of cards currently on your carrousel
inventory.xml appears to be a consolidation of all the card XML data in one file, but I haven't confirmed it's completeness.

models.list is a binary list of all the cards in you models folder with a wide variety of information about there status including which clips are currently enabled. I've learned how to decode most but not all of this information and you can enable or disable clips by turning a flag bit on or off when VG is shut down. I wrote an AppleScript to do this and it works. If this file is deleted, the VG app will recreate it based on other sources.

Those are the areas I've explored. I can make guesses about other elements of the data folder, but that's all they would be

Hope this helps.

Just so you know i am working on the next thing. after a PM from Alexis about the problem with more than 1 girl
------------------------------

I haven't had any dialog with Alexis abut the new registry keys.
I've discovered everything on my own..
But there is a problem in Small Mode when more than one Girl is running..
You can Push a clip to ForceAnim, and that Clip will Play..
but it Doesn't always play in Spot #1.
but the Clip Being Played in Spot #1 is the One reported in CurrentAnim.

So there is an Issue where you can't confirm that the clip you Pushed has started to play.

like you mention, you could read currentClips and then parse the list to see if the clip is listed.
but then you have to parse the list with every change..

I think we should write to Alexis, and request that each Dance slot be dedicated to a specific registry location.

So If we push a clip to ForceAnim. it will always be played in Spot #1 and Always be reported in CurrentAnim.
Push the clip to ForceAnim, and it replaces, or plays in Spot #1

The currentClips should also be listed in Order..
spot #1, Spot #2, Spot #3.... Spot #10
and if that spot is Empty, *****, Zombie, Hidden it should be reported that way in the registry instead of just being skipped.
that way there would be a way to know what Slot is busy and what slot isn't, they would also be in order.

If we do get the ability to control up to 10 clips,
I'd like to see 10 separate registry Key pairs used..

ForceAnim and CurentAnim for Spot 1 ' no need to change the name as it already is there..
ForceAnim2 and CurentAnim2 for Spot 2
ForceAnim3 and CurentAnim3 for Spot 3
ForceAnim4 and CurentAnim4 for Spot 4
ForceAnim5 and CurentAnim5 for Spot 5
ForceAnim6 and CurentAnim6 for Spot 6
ForceAnim7 and CurentAnim7 for Spot 7
ForceAnim8 and CurentAnim8 for Spot 8
ForceAnim9 and CurentAnim9 for Spot 9
ForceAnim10 and CurentAnim10 for Spot 10

As this has yet to be written on Totem's part, I think Ideas or Suggestions to Alexis is important.
what are your thoughts?
